Shea and Melidosian Honored with Good Will Awards for 2005
|
|
|
|
For nearly 20 years, Baird & Warner has awarded the Wyllys Warner Baird Good Will Award to individuals in our firm who have done extraordinary things to earn Good Will for themselves and for our company.
This year, Sales Associate Kathy Shea and Chief Information Officer Charlie Melidosian were recognized for the work they’ve done in service to their communities.
Orland Park Sales Associate Kathy Shea was nominated and selected for her selfless actions in aiding Gulf Coast hurricane victims. Kathy used her experience from her 19 years as a critical care nurse to volunteer with the Red Cross. Her two-week stint included working in a clinic in Natchitoches, the oldest town in Louisiana, where not only did she dispense medical attention, but also care and comforting to those who needed it.

B&W GWN: New Charities Added, Increase to Annual Grants

The Baird & Warner Good Will Network Board of Advisors and branch office representatives convened last month for their annual meeting to review last year's efforts and to learn about projects and news for 2006.

It was decided that thanks to the increase in the transaction donation, each branch office’s annual grant will increase to $2,000 from $1,500.
Also, the B&W Good Will Network is supporting two companywide efforts this year: the Back-to-School Drive from July 15 through August 11 and Make A Difference Day, which is October 28. This year, the B&W Good Will Network is adding two new charities to our family: the CARA Program and Shelter Inc. The charities, along with many others, were nominated by branch offices to be considered for our major grants. All were vetted by the Board of Advisors, who then went on site visits to several organizations before voting on which they believed were most representative of the spirit of our mission. | |
Good Will Network Board of Advisor members Mable Benton (HO), Gailene Cowger-Fine (HO), Andra O'Neill (LF), Mike Polera (MPFS), Judy Stowe (GE), and Jennifer Warden (HO), recently traveled to the beautifully appointed Ronald McDonald House in the west suburbs, to make a dinner for families residing in the house.
On the menu: beef and chicken tacos and fajitas, refried beans, Spanish rice, fresh fruit and desserts; and of course, strawberry and lemon margaritas (virgin). |

"It's a tasty and easy dish to make," says Gailene Cowger. _______________________
1 tablespoon lard or solid vegetable shortening
1 1/2 cups long grain rice
1/4 large onion, finely chopped
2 or 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 whole tomatoes from a 15-ounce can
1/4 cup liquid from canned tomatoes
40-ounce can chicken broth (30 ounces used total)
Open can of tomatoes and chicken broth and set aside. These ingredients have to be added quickly, so have them ready.
Heat lard or shortening in a saucepan on medium-high. Add rice, stirring constantly. When rice is brown, immediately add the onion and garlic and stir so it is evenly mixed. Quickly add the 2 tomatoes (squish them with your hand). Add 1/4 cup of liquid from the can of tomatoes and 3/4 of the entire amount of chicken broth. Bring to a full boil, cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Let simmer until rice is tender and most of broth has evaporated, about 20 to 30 minutes. (The remaining broth can be added if rice is still a little hard.) Remove rice from heat and leave covered until ready to serve.
